Viewer Voice: Show Sex Offenders' Faces
In last week's Talk to 12, we shared an email from Lori, who wrote that she didn't care to see the faces of sex offenders on the TV screen during the dinner hour. We got a couple of responses.
JD writes:
I want to comment on the woman who said the sex offenders faces should not be seen on tv. She could not be more wrong. We need to know what these people look like so that we can keep our kids and family away from them or report them.
And Eloise of North Augusta writes:
This post is regarding Lori's statement, posted on September 21, 2007. She expresses her displeasure that the media is "plastering" faces of sex offenders "all over the tv sceen". I for one, would much rather, know what the sex offender looks like, rather than knowing his name and address. If a sex offender is in a location he is not supposed to be, school, playground, etc., it would be impossible to reveal this violation without knowing what he looks like. I feel once convicted, they give up all rights to a secret identity and lifestyle. Without knowing what they look like, we can not police their whereabouts. We need to stay alert and let the sex offenders know that, WE will be watching them. Don't let them think they can "fly under the radar".

I think some people need to get a life. Turn off Nancy Grace and stop spying on your neighbors. What is the next witch hunt after the pandering politicians get done beating this dead horse.
I think people ned to get a life as well. Do you realize if these people want to get to a bus stop or school they do not have to live there they can drive. These people are doing what they are supposed to de, leave them alone. Stop spying on people.
I just wanted to say that individuals who have blogged on this page below me should realize that if you value safety in general, you should want to be educated and informed; ESPECIALLY when it comes to the safety or your family.The fact is, no one is going to take time out of their busy schedule to check the public record once a day.
If you do feel as though another time is appropriate to show these peoples faces, then you are downplaying the danger which may surround a certain individual. Sometimes life is not ideal, but I for one believe that the freedom in which we live has to be supported
by an educated constituency. The implication is that seeing these criminals faces on TV is educating yourself, as opposed other forms of education such as schooling etc.
As far as the issue of spying, there is nothing posted on WRDW that is not available publicy.
I applaud WRDW for doing this.

I AM PROBABLY THE LEAST LIKELY PERSON TO AGREE WITH WHAT WRDW BELIEVES IS A PUBLIC SERVICE BY SHOWING THE FACES OF PEOPLE CONVICTED OF A SEX OFFENSE INASMUCH AS I AM ONE OF THEM. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THE "MENACE" IS THEN HE/SHE COULD BE WALKING DOWN THE AISLE NEXT TO YOU AT WAL-MART OR PUMPING GAS NEXT TO YOU AT THE GAS STATION, WORKING AT THE SAME JOB YOU HAVE OR, GOD FORBID, SITTING NEXT TO YOU IN CHURCH! THE PUBLIC IS ENTITLED TO AS MUCH FEAR AND PARANOIA AS IT CAN TAKE. WHAT WE NEED IS FOR THE VIGILANTES TO SCOUR THE WEBSITE TO FIND AS MANY AS THEY CAN SO THEY CAN HELP RID SOCIETY OF SUCH TERRIFYING BLEMISHES; I MEAN, HEY WHO'S GOING TO MISS THEM, RIGHT? all registered sex offenders are not dangerous because some girls were already sexually active and the parent just didnt like the young man the child was talking to or having a relation with and lying about her age. do you not think there should be a distingushing factor for these people should they all be in the same category a concerened mother .
